Law of interesting work

I don’t understand a hell or I don’t give a damn what I don’t like. It’s the statement I made to my TL i.e. Technical Leader a person who is old enough to advise some one technically and who can lead a team of fresher man, techie and pseudo techie. I clash with my TL most of the times not technically but in understanding people’s mentality towards work, work allocation, people understanding and motivation. I simply call it team dynamics. I feel it changes from team to team.

Just got a sandwich and sat with my colleague for breakfast, my TL who’s my favorite tea-mate just joined us. We chatted from elections to evolutions to Ileana. Our discussion about the team and team dynamics are never ending.

One heated argument was “if same work is allocated to a person multiple times, it improves work efficiency and the understanding of the problem”. I really gone mad for his statement and said it pure bullshit it’s going to improve nothing, the work is gonna suck the interest of a person if it is an uninteresting problem. I hope he would have meant an interesting problem:).

I do really feel bored to do the same work, again and again and again. Personally I will do first time good, second time better and third time worst**:) (** If I am not interested). At uninterested work times I feel I should show un-interest in my interest;).

I think my TL had a point too, if his entire team asks for an interesting (“by law”) work, if he has time-bounded activities to be completed, what he can do? Business can’t go on personal interest or the individual employee’s interest; it always goes for money.

By law:

  1. All work are not interesting
  2. Interesting work always have lesser time (Amount of time for work)
  3. Interesting work is always less (Amount for work)
  4. Interesting work at all times are not interesting
  5. Uninteresting work with more time is interesting (lot of leisure time)
  6. Uninteresting work done by your buddy is interesting for you (Other side is always green)

Finally, I lost my interest in writing this :(. CY…

A few cosmetic enhancements before a my thoughts.

I would prefer Arial(8-10) than any other font for a complete textual blog like this.

As "another TL" said, spelling and grammatical errors may be reviewed. For e.g (Our discussion about the team and team dynamics "is" never ending.)

When putting smileys, it would be better if you can put a whitespace before the smiley.

I don't think "hell" or "damn" can be used in all forms like the "f" word.

Now coming to the point :),

Understanding others' mentality is almost an art. To some, it comes naturally. To several others, it comes by experience. To a lot, it doesn't come at all.

Once my TL advised to me have n no. of years of experience rather than n * 1 year of experience. This means its great to do one thing in 3 years than doing a thing thrice in 3 years.

I could well agree with your TL's statement if it can be a little tuned to say "if similar work is". But there is still a threshold to the no. of times.

And finally, interest is subjective. It varies between persons and their attitudes and to one person, it fairly depends on the situation. Not all men are interested in a thing. Not a single person is interested in something at all the times.

I don't really know which law states as you mentioned. But more than half it is not stable and the rest are wrong.

I know my comment is long enough to be a blog by itself. But I couldn't write a crisper comment. ;)

Sridhar,

It is nice to see you writing amidst chaos in office. ;-) I hardly comment on the lingo as I believe “Communication is conveying thoughts no matter how good your language is”.
However I suggest you to read more and more. Repetitive reading could help us in understanding the nuances of the language. Coming back to the subject, the statement which made you hot (“If same work is allocated to a person multiple times, it improves work efficiency and the understanding of the problem”) has multiple dimensions. The varying magnitude of the subject has to be scrutinized without individual insights.

From your TL’s perspective, work has to be done at minimal cost. Individual interests need not be given significance at the prize of team’s productivity. So he allocates work to the one who is proficient at what was given.

//And finally, interest is subjective. It varies between persons and their attitudes and to one person, it fairly depends on the situation. Not all men are interested in a thing. Not a single person is interested in something at all the times.//

I totally agree with what Vinayagar said. I know people who like to do the work they are proficient at. Most of the married women and elder men who no longer want to take risk come into this group.

The fresh, young minds (like me. You are old enough not to be considered as youth :-)) who like to take up the challenge yell like what you did. ;-)

There is a third category of people who works only for bread don’t care about the business they deal with.

// Understanding others' mentality is almost an art. To some, it comes naturally. To several others, it comes by experience. To a lot, it doesn't come at all.//

Well said Vinayagar!! Here comes the character of a leader to distinguish between the three categories of people.

So here’s the generic law,

“A best leader could derive the best results from everybody in the team doing what’s best for him and the team”

Keep going!!

Regards,
Arun.

Arun's generic law reminds me of John Nash's theory of economics. But I'm afraid none may become the best leader over a period of time.

I would be happy to tweak it to "A leader will be considered as best when he could derive the best results from everybody in the team doing what’s best for the team and make it look like it is the best for the members(though not always) in the team also."

Thanks a lot Amit,Vinayagar and Arun for your valuable comments. I take a point to improve my grammar and sentence formation skills.

For other comments regarding the work, understanding others, leadership and attitude. Its all unique and cannot be compared.I have no comment on others personality and attitude. Its all my own view.

Sridhar,
I guess you are more inclined towards making these comments, owing to the fact that you probably have 'experienced' this.. But ultimately i guess, it comes down to an individual perspective.. and the nature of the work.. and though I can never forget the klocworks horror :) .. i guess some things are just better left unsaid..!

In India, for everyone it’s all about saving their ass.. TL is trying to save his ass by completing the work at any cost. Sometime it may be stupidity of the TL, but believe me most of the time, he just delegates his frustration, even he is forced to do same kind of work everyday!. Even though he understands your point, he can't help most of the time, so double the frustration!!. As a TL, I can tell you that in Indian IT industry TL’s (read TL and above) job sucks.

So have mercy on TL, Blame the whole industry and the way it’s been functioning.
